Quilt Blocks that Work Well with Machine Embroidery

Looking for a great quarantine project? Make a quilt!

Hopefully, you and yours are safe at home while this unprecedented pandemic is running its course. Make good use of your time by grabbing your stash and scraps and stitch up a quilt. These five pattern tutorials are beginner-friendly and allow you to add some machine embroidery in the process.

Consider making small charity quilts for babies and children. Wall hangings and table runners not only make wonderful gifts, they can also be donated to charitable organizations for raffles and fund raising.

Here are five quilt blocks that lend themselves nicely to working with the fabric you have on hand as well as embellished with embroidery.

Outline designs, like Redwork, can be used to decorate the blocks as well as quilt them.

Embellishents add interest to any quilt block. Embroidery threads can be matched to fabrics on hand. Designs spice up plain fabrics you may have on hand that would otherwise not be considered.

Here are six quilt blocks that would be good to try:

Snowball

Fresh Diamonds

Single Irish Chain

Sawtooth Star

Churn Dash

Rail Fence

I like to make blocks slightly larger than the size that I need and cut them down to size after. Once blocks are stitched and trimed, embroider as desired before stitching blocks together.

Border designs are ideal for fabric strips such as those used in making Fresh Diamonds, Churn Dash, or Rail Fence blocks.

Depending on the size of block, corner designs look quite pretty on corner pieces of Churn Dash or Snowball blocks.

What are you making during the shutdown?
