About Joan

I learned to sew from my Grandmother who worked in a 2nd floor walk-up sewing factory for a living.  Although sewing factory rules had changed since the great shirtwaist fire in NY, it was still by all accounts a true Sweatshop.  I was taught on a Singer Treadle.  Fabric was always a love of mine.  My uncle worked in the NYC garment district; first as a pattern cutter (his wood rulers hang on my Sewing Room wall) and then as a fabric buyer.  Between Grandma and my uncle, my cousin and I had the latest fabric and style of dresses without the Cinderella Dress Company label!  And, all our dolls had complete wardrobes and bedding.  They say sewing skips a generation.  Must be true as my mother and her 2 sisters did not sew.  My daughters did not sew (probably because their toys, their clothes and our entire home deco was homemade!!!  Widow at 28 with 2-1/2 and 4 month).  However, my granddaughter was 5 when she made her first quilt.   Embarrassed, my daughters then started sewing!   I wish my Grandmother could be here right now to see how sewing has evolved.  No more meat packaging paper for quilt templates, no unnecessary cutting square by square by hand and not even to mention the computerized machines.  My uncle was blown away by the embroidery machine.  He especially loves his monogrammed handkerchiefs!  At 79, I set him up with his first computer and now at 86, he is a Wiz and he is so engrossed in these designs and bringing them over to the embroidery machine.  With this, I also get a history lesson on how things were made in the 40s and 50s and the buying trips to Spain for Madeira Thread.  Soooooo very glad we have the electronics that we have today!
