joann7657-Welcome to the wonderful world of machine embroidery! (ME) Welcome as well to ATG!
It seems like you have become a little frustrated with your downloads. Frankly, everyone has had to go through the same thing at one time or another.
First of all, you cannot download directly unless your machine has the USB connection and you are attaching that cable to your computer. There are other factors, including your computers ability to 'see' the embroidery machine. Pattieann is right, if you have the right equipment, do her steps.
To download most Net items, generally, no program is required. A download simply places your design on your computer and when you want to move it to the embroidery machine, you must have some sort of software for that. You also need to know what ME format you need.
I am unaware of any software for ME that is free. I would suggest that you discuss the software for your machine, they will know what works and what does not. This software is an addition you need for your machine in most events. It is like buying a car, get the car and you will need some extras for it, like tires. LOL
A scan and download are two different things. A scan looks at words or pictures and recognizes them for your use on your computer.
A download takes a file, photo or information from the Net and places it on your computer. In this case, the download only places your design in your selected format to be available to send to your machine.
Zip is a method to send file information efficiently through compression. You can search the Net to find "Zip software," Microsoft (if you have a PC not a MAC) has one that is free. You need to 'decompress/extract' the file before you can use it. You will see zip files all over the Net, so it is part of a PC that is needed by everyone.
I hope I have helped you. This is a lot of information and you did ask a lot of questions. Feel free to continue to ask questions about any other issues you might be having. ATG members are known for caring and sharing.
