Embroidering the back of a small child's shirt

What is the best way to embroider the back of a small child's shirt.  It's a rather large embroidery design, and I am wondering if opening a side seam would be best.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

I would use a nylon cutaway mesh, hoop it and embroider directly on it.  When the design is done either burn it out with a stencyle burner or carfully cut it out and then put it on the shirt as an applique.

I have been doing all my sweat and tee shirts like this for awhile now.  It is great to do onsies also.

If you cannot "doughnut" the shirt up and around the sides of the hoop, then opening the seam would be what I would do.

Example of the doughnut method - http://www.emblibrary.com/EL/elprojects/SimpleProduct_ELP.aspx?CS_ProductID=PR1308&CS_Catalog=Elprojects

Marge and Pattiann are right, there is more than one way to do anything you want to accomplish.

That is why AnnTheGran, with the Forum (set up very well for finding answers) and Blogs is the best site on the Net.

I try to patronize where I learn when ever I can.  That does not always work for various reasons, but supporting them is a positive thing.

Here is my version of 'donut' hooping, I bet yours will look a little differently, but that is natural!
