    Goofs and blunders

I think it would be great fun for all the newbies and us old folks too, to hear about our greatest or most hilarious blunders while sewing.   Some new folks seem to be reluctant to ask questions and it might loosen them up a little to hear that, we too, have been there and done that.  I'll post mine later, gotta run to the Chiropractor now.

    Re: Goofs and blunders

Back from the chiropractor;  back's feeling some better.  I fell off one of those huge high 3"curbs in the middle of the parking lot last month...most embarrassing - and painful too.

My most ridiculous recent fiasco...I'm like Judy, I am a saver, never throw anything away if I have the remotest idea it may be useful one day.  Along with my collection of used needles, I have a huge collection of drier sheets.  They are such cute little things, surely they are useful for something.   Right?  Well, I came up with the idea of using them for stabilizer!  They are really strong and I thought they would be ideal.  WRONG!!!  I had the biggest birdsnests, bent my needle, and had fuzz all down in my bobbin case.  I thought I'd never get it cleaned up.  I didn't dare take it to my dealer; I'd have had to tell him what I did and I was too embarrassed.  Anyway, if it ever crosses your mind to improvise on stabilizer, my best suggestion would be DON'T!  Use only what is specifically designed for an embroidery machine.  I promise you, I won't use anything else, ever!

O K ,I will fess up here, I was very tired one day while sewing at work,(no less) and sewed my t-shirt to a seat cover. In hopes that no one would see me, I reached for my seam ripper and was trying to get loose from it and my friend walked up behind me,I thought she was going to lose it with laughter, then of course she just had to announce it to everyone, including the boss. So I just started laughing along with everyone else, then I announced to them all,"Well at least I get into my work !" What else can you do,lol.Big Smile

    Well Ladies.....

Linda..Judy and I recently tried to steer another forum lady away from using "paper" products on her embroidery machine.  It is interesting about dryer sheets though.  Quilters use them for applique pieces.  Sewing the fabric sheet right sides together, slit the back and turn out.  Doesn't seem to affect sewing machines.

Linda, I hope you are feeling better.  I did that once.  It was a rain run-off "gutter" at an amusement park.  I ended up in a cast to my knee for 4-1/2 months.  My kids...they were angry we had to leave the amusement park and cancel our vacation in NH and head back home.

Judy, prior to children leaving home, I sewed on my dining room table.  I always left the tablecloth on so machine would not shift and "run away".  Like your t-shirt, I have sewn the tablecloth to my project(s).

My continuous blunder is sewing my fingernail to the seam of a project.  Not once either.  I always thank my lucky stars that I have nails!  Could always start a new piercing trend.

Yes, thank you.  I have a disc that's bad, and I'm doing everything I can to avoid surgery.  My husband has had it done twice and is bionic now with rods in his spine and still in pain.  The chiropractor helps so I'm going as long as I can.

I once sewed my finger in a seam too.  The needle broke when it hit the bone, thankfully, or I'd probably still be walking around with a skirt hanging from my finger.  I only did that once!Big Smile

I have never sewed my fingers, but I know a girl who did.She worked at Chrysler with me and was sewing away on those lovely ,fast, commcercial machines, someone hollered at her and she turned and looked, was not paying attention and sewed her hand underneath the machine, then in an effort to free herself she got them both caught in the machine. It took 5 mechanics 3 hours to free her, with the paramedics standing by waiting to take her to the hospital. So ,since then I really pay attention to where my hands are in relationship to the machine, and I never get up from my machines and walk away with them on,too much can happen. She never worked after that, both her hands were so bad she couldn't.

    Re: Goofs and blunders

After my most recent foray into the sewing room, I've thought of another essential sewing notion -----bandaids.  It seems that I am forever pricking myself on a needle or pin and leaving a red spot on whatever I'm working on.  I keep a box in my notions drawer for that reason.

ok...so here's a great blunder for you....hopefully, picture will be inserted....  I've titled this "why your puppy can't help you organize your sewing area."  Or how about "Jack up to his usual 'stuff'?"  Between him and Mike, life is never boring around here.  Honest ...one second he was not there and the next the spool of purple thread was missing!  Sheesh!
