Make sure the thread is feeding from the bobbin in the correct direction and through the proper guides.

When threading the machine, do so with the presser foot up.  This allows the thread to enter the tension mechanism.  When the foot is down, this mechanism closes and the thread cannot enter properly and the tension control has nothing to control - the stitching may look ok on top, but the bobbin thread is messy.

Set the tension as recommended by the mfg.

Check your needle, sometimes if it is not inserted properly, the bobbin will go goofy.

I was wondering if you are winding your own bobbins or using the pre-wound? If you are winding your own maybe you did not wind it correctly and that could be the cause of the problem. Just a thought. Good luck to you, kt3234 Karen

I too have just been learning about this machine. Sometimes my bobbin stitching is ugly. I have been winding my own bobbins. I also am having a aweful time with hooping. I wonder if I got it hoop tight. I don't know how tight a drum sound should sound. Now I wonder if I am hooping right and it might be a bobbin problem.

    Thanks lcb

If you have tried everything and your machine is acting up then the only thing I can suggest is a trip to your local dealers. I know that none of us want to do this but sometimes the machine needs to be serviced. And this way at least a person can talk to you and you can show him/her your problem and they can let you know if it is something you are doing wrong or in fact the machine needing to be serviced. Best of luck to you, kt3234 Karen

I have the Brother 4000D, and was having trouble with upper tension and the bobbin thread bunching terribly.  Took it into my local dealer (who are great) and they determined that something was wrong with my feed dogs.  So, it's gone to Brother for repair since they didn't feel comfortable doing anything locally.  I've had it for 2 and 1/2 years, so I figured it's Ok to go back to Brother to get looked at and repaired.  I'll have to decide on other things for Christmas if I don't get it back in time, but sure want the machine to stitch correctly.  Good Luck.
