    tensions on pe700ll

I know my instruction book  on explaining things is not the best.  I am having trouble trying to get my top and bottom tension to look like it is suppose to,  I can't seem to get the upper tension just visable on the back side.  I have started at 0 and gone up the numbers. It still doesn't look right.  The book explains little of the upper tension and almost nothing of lower tension.   Do you leave the bottom tension at the 4.0 ?  Is the whole focus of the thread tension to make the bottom look right in the upper tension ? Yes I have read the troubleshooting in the back, and I have rechecked my steps but I still can't get the thread on the back to look correct.  My thread keeps breaking as well. it sort of shredds and breaks.  I use madira rayon 40 , or sulky 40 or madera polyester 40 .  What am  I doing wrong.  How do I tell if my plate has a bur.  I do change my needle.  please someone give me some advise.  I have had my machine not quite a year but I'm still learning what to do.   Thank you

Leave the tension setting as recommended in the manual.

Be sure you are using a needle for machine embroidery.

Use bobbin thread for machine embroidery.  Size 60 unless the manual specifies differently.

The top thread should wrap slightly to the back.

Sometimes the slightest amount of lint or a bit of a thread snip can cause problems...turn off the power, remove the throat plate and bobbin case and gently clean with a cotton swap or the brush that came with the machine.....refer to the maintenance section of the manual.

I found the test at http://www.annthegran.com/cs/blogs/avid-embroiderer/archive/2008/07/03/the-avid-embroiderer-presents-needles-july-3-2008.aspx  helped me.

After doing the test for my format I was able to adjust a little better than I did by eyeballing it.
