    Outlines that don't outline!

I have a problem with designs that stitch out really well, then when it starts to do the outline, it either sews too far outside the design or on top of the design... this is so frustrating!!  What am I doing wrong?  I have the Brother Innovis 4500D machine.

    Hello.

Sounds as if your fabric is shifting.  Is your project being secured well in the hoop or secured well enough working hoopless by adhesive-backed stabilizer or an adhesive spray?

This will also sound very weird.  I have a Brother Innov-is 4000D.  My outline stitch was not meeting up correctly as well.  In-the-hoop projects were becoming very difficult to achieve.  Then, I realized what was happening.  My machine is set up with my wall behind the machine.  The hoop was actually hitting the wall without me realizing this was happening.  So when the hoop hit, it was knocked kelter and off the original outline.  Sounds stupid, but........

That whole machine hitting the wall thing sounds just something I would do, but no, that's not it.  And it is happening with hooped items, as well as items done with adhesive spray...  I just can't figure it out!

Yeah, I hated admitting my inadequacies!!  But, with the large hoop hitting the wall, it really did put everything askew.

If someone cannot come forward with an answer for you, you may have to have your machine serviced.  Possibly the arm was "knocked" and must be 'reset'.  I remember my dealer stating how sensitive the arm was especially when traveling with the unit.

I too have the Brother Innovis 4500D and I just love it! The only design I trouble with the outline was one that I had digitized from someone. With a few e-mails we were able to straighten it out. I did find that since it was a very dense design I had to use an extra heavy cutaway along with a solvy topping. It made a world of difference. I would make sure you are well stabilized and using a new needle. Make sure that you baste around the inside of the hoop to avoid shifting.

Are all your designs doing it? Are they designs that you have done with success before on another machine? I know how frustrating it can be to have a design stitch out beautifully and then you do the outline and ughhhh.....

I have been using a lightweight tear-away, so that may indeed be the problem.... I will switch to the heavy cutaway and see if that makes a difference...

    Thanks so much!

p.s.  I ABSOLUTELY love this machine too!

You don't say how long you have been machine embroidering (ME), but no matter, we all need a refresher from time to time.

Please check two of my blogs:  Stabilizer and Hooping those will assist you with your questions.

Also consider uploading a photo for us to review, we all have been there, so we want to help.  The AnnTheGran (ATG) community is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful I have ever seen.

    Re: Outlines that don't outline!

I am using a Husqvarna, Rose, and I also have a problem with outlines that don't outline properly.  I often find that the design does not always stitch out properly.  What I have learned is that my hoop viberates when it is stitching on the right hand side of the hoop.  I have taken my clear plastic table that goes up around the machine and turned it around and move it up next to the machine to give some extra support to the hoop.  I have also provided support by setting there and let the hoop blide on my thumb until the hoop is fully supported by the bed of the sewing machine. I normally do not have problems with designs that I have purchased, but rather the free designs.  I do not let that keep me from using free designs, I always make it a practice of stitching out all designs on a practice piece of fabric first.  This gives me an idea of how well the design was digitized first.
