I certainly think it cannot hurt, especially when embroidering on stretchy fabrics and using a sticky back or adhesive spray on your stabilizer. I would do it by hand because my machine does not have this option. I did find a website who offered it as a free download. It does a basting stitch for a 4x4, 5x7 and 6x10 frame. Since it is so simple for me to add it to my design I just go ahead and use it often.

The site for the free basting frames is: www.threadartist.com/embroidery_basting_frames_lesson.htm

I generally do on any design except very tiny ones.  My machine will do it automatically. The free download sounds like a good deal if yours won't.

Margie - I do recommend basting for all the but the smallest of designs.  It keeps everything where it belongs.

You can see my Blog on hooping where I do address this issue.  I am a real fan of hoopless and basting.

    Thank You

I would like to thank all who responded to my inquiries.  A special thank you to Pat for referring me to her blog on stablizer.  Where do you get your ideas for projects.  I thought the photos of your projects were fantastic.  Once again thank you.  Margie

Thanks for all your help.  Margie

I read your blog on stablizers and hooping and it clarified many misgivings I had.  Excellent blogs.  I do have a question on hooping.  In your blog you stated you put a mesh under the hoop.  Why did you do that?  Would that mesh have been on the outside of your project?  Thank you for your help.  Margie

Thanks for all your help.  Margie

Gee, the check is in the mail for your unsolicited compliment...LOL

My Blogs are based on my adventures as a machine embroidery (ME) enthusiast.  You will notice I never use the term excellence or anything of the sort.  I am an excited about the blog because I get great input with more ideas and thoughts.  As you know, there is more than one way to do most things and ME is no exception.

I would place the soft mesh floating under the hoop because it is soft on the skin for a t-shirt or the like.  Another reason would be for more stabilization without adding bulk which can build up fast with many stabilizers.  And, sometimes, darn it, I just do.  LOL
