Re: How many live in Central Florida?

Oh, by the way, for those that live in the Ocala/Villages area if you don't already know, there is a Viking dealer in Oxford called Yely's off 301 and Ocala Sewing Center is CLOSED, he lost his Viking dealership.

Thanks to this computer generation[:'(].. the website I need to download a new update to get my software running right is DOWN and it's operated out of London and they don't know WHEN they will have it fixed.. it's been over a week.. POO Good thing I have the ole laptop to keep me going.

I have been to the Yely's in the Villages.  She is a great lady and so are the people that work for her.  She started out in Tavares which is where I am, so I went to her store there and then she moved into our Joanne's where she still has a store.

So if you get the chance you won't be disappointed.  She also puts out a monthly calendar of events.

Re: How many live in Central Florida?

Thanks Sandy, I've been in that JoAnn's, but didn't notice the sewing machines.. it was right at closing time so didn't have any time to look around.  Gal I talked to in Oxford was pleasant, more than I can say about Ocala Sewing.  It will be nice to see what's going on and new to use my machine for ...again.

Are you going to the luncheon?  I have room for another if you want to ride along. As well as Stop and go at other sewing places coming and going.. lol

wow, I have been at a conference for Family and Consumer Sciences for two days talking about our future (for those of you who don't know it used to be Home Economics).  I told them about how many people are sewing, quilting, embroidering especially machine embroidery and I told them we have to work on getting to these students.  Everything now in our area has to be job related, I told them about all the entrepreneurs and teachers in the sewing shops and said we need to write curriculum to cover this, we are missing an opportunity with the new generation.  If it is computer generated they will be interested.  Anyway, I have missed reading all the emails on the blog and forums and you guys have been voting for colleges I see, go noles, I didn't get my degrees there but my son, daughter-in-law, and son-in-law did.  I am behind on working on my name tag, did a few but not settled on one yet, off to get on the laptop and see what my husband Bob has designed for our name tags.

I am also a transplanted person in florida from the age of 8 in 1950, we moved from Indiana to Panama City then to Miami in 1952.  Have lived there off and on until 2006 and moved to Citrus County and live in Citrus Hills, we love it here.

    Glenda,

Did you happen to make a quilt in red and black that had  Florida Semiole in the center?  I saw a quilt at the Quilt Place in Rockledge on the quilting machine about a year ago. June at the Ultimate Sewing Place told me that someone in Titusville made the quilt and had taken it to the quilt place to have it machine quilted.  It was simply beautiful.  Let me know if you were the one who made that quilt.

Re: How many live in Central Florida?

Sandra, if every one looked REALLY REALLY close I bet no one noticed your spelling error  I didn't see it until you pointed it out.. LOL  Just blame it on fingers typing slower than your mind thinking, not ole age. HA

Lani- Depends on what kind of fabric you are looking for.. quilting -there are several shops, I don't frequent. I'm cheap so stick with JoAnn sales days.  IF I'm headed for special fabrics I don't do Whipperwill that's a 1/2 mile or less north on the right past Markets of Marion in a little strip mall, then there's Peggy's Heirloom 5 miles west on 200 from 75, there's a couple more but I'm not impressed.  I'm spoiled from my quilt shop in Mich and there just hasn't been anything to compare.  Was in Jacksonville for awhile and The Ole Green Cupboard had the best selection IF you are willing to travel, but I love the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shop in Trenton if I'm going to travel the distance.  Now I hear from another blogger there's a great place called Laura's on the east coast that carries the heirloom fabrics like batiste which I can't even find at JoAnn's anymore.

Speaking of JoAnn's they have a sign in the Ocala store they are hiring for help in the Villages JoAnn's.. wonder where that will be and when it will open. AND the next question whom will it cater to?  Quilters, Crafts, Scrapbooking, Floral, Home Dec or just Sewing? ? I know it won't be dedicated to us embroiderer's.

Elaine is right about losing the new generation, they know nothing about supporting themselves without computers including adding and subtracting if the computer goes down in the store and they have to give back change, they DON'T know how to do it. The arts are going by the wayside, they don't have an interest in the hand created item, BUT there is so much computerization that can be use and adapted.. it's ripe for the picking.  Look at us, we have all seen a lot of change and there's probably more to come but we don't lose sight of the old as well.

I have 2 name tags done.. didn't turn out too bad, did them on water soluble so they are a little sticky yet.. LOL  I'll see how they look in the morning after they have dried.

    night all

Take heart about the younger generations!  My daughter-in-law sews-slipcovers, curtains duvet covers, clothes would love to ME but hasn't squirrled away the money yet.  My 6 and 5 year old granddaughters love to "sew" the pre-gathered fabric into dressed.  They also just pinned, cut and sewed Hannah Montana pj's. They have a $99 machine I got at Wal-mart for them.  My two daughters also sew.  One daughter also does needlepoint for the "thread arts" are not dead yet :-)

No, I didn't make that quilt but I know the one you mean.  It is beautiful.  I finished my jacket yesterday at the store and will bring it to share at the luncheon.

Re: How many live in Central Florida?

Did you teach them how to sew or their mother?  So many children do not have a relative to show them.  My oldest grandson 14, had to sew a flag and he took to the machine like a natural.  The younger grandson was fortunate enough to take sewing and cooking in his 6th grade.  He also took to it.  His mother doesn't know how to sew even though her mother is a great seamtress and crafty person.  I am surprised she hasn't gotten a ME machine.  I love to hear when young people are learning the art of sewing.  My two granddaugthers are into sports, the oldest one does make her own Barbie designs once in a while, she was really into to it before softball came along.

You have given me an idea for Christmas presents for the granddaughters.  I wish I were closer to them to show them how to get started, one lives in Orlando and the other in West Palm Beach.  When they come up here they want to see our Nature Coast, go to the falls and etc.  Well, I am going to have to get off, Bob is ready to work on our name tags, he has a laptop he bought for my birthday but likes the big screen of this computer. Have a great weekend everyone,

Thank you, I am hoping to go and if there is still room would love to have a ride. Are you sure this would not be out of the way.  I haven't posted much but have been keeping up with all the postings - we have lots of talent out there. Should be a fun day.

Thank you all so much for your kind words. We are leaving first thing in the morning, very early, likely around 4 am. We will travel safe and I will let everyone know when we get back. We will be back way before the 19th for sure.Tom is holding up better than I am for sure. She was more like my sister(which I dont have) than sister in law.

I only have one favor to ask of all the ladies out there, please go get your mammograms! Had Pat gone one month earlier she would still be with us today. She had a very aggressive *** cancer.

Thanks to you all and I will talk with you when we get home.

     Judy  Smile

Help me to start each day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude!
