It´s not a Top Tip but it´s a new member

Hi, I want to introduce myself to you.

I live in Germany and came here because I was looking for an old friend. Now I am one of you (I hope so Big Smile)

What am I doing? Above all I like painting. I live in a house not far away from the sea in a small village, have a big garden and 3 cats. I like working in my garden (tomatoes, apples, pears, blackberrys, flowers and a lot of grass thats growing to fast...)

I am 48 years old and I´d like to have more pratice in the English language.

Hope you all have a nice sunday. My best regards from Germany   Mona

Hello Mona.  One of my best friends came to the US from Stutgart and she is so lovely.

Since you reminded me of her I am going to write her right now.

I hope you find your friend and make many more.  Please count me as one.  I am in California but do not have a garden.

Your English is very good and better than some of us born here. Smile

I remember an old joke; What do you call someone who knows two languages,   they are bilingual.

What do you call someone who knows many languages,   they are multilingual.

What do you call someone who knows just one language,  American.

I can poke fun at that because I only know one language.  Perhaps you might teach us a little German like "embroidery" and "beautiful".

    Hi Mona,

Welcome, and I for one would like to have a fiend in Germany.  You mentioned some of your hobbies but do you do any type of sewing?  We do a lot of ME and quilting on this site.  There are so many of us that could answer any question you might have.

    Again Welcome.

    Marge

Hello embnaut. Thank you very much for answering me...

Maybe my English looks good but you should see me sitting here drenched with sweat jugglering the dictionary. Confused

I know what you mean with the joke....and I have to say my experiences tell me the same about in the USA. But I understand that. The most of the people in the world speak English too, so it is easy for you to be to lazy to learn another language....

I had been in California in 2008 on a round trip. It was great!

Your friend in Stuttgart will be very happy to hear from you once again.

You wrote "Please count me as one". Excuse me...how do you mean this? Can I count friends here on a list or somehow? You see, my English is not so good as I would like....

But I can teach you some german words, of course. Embroidery is "Stickerei" and not easy to pronounce for you: "Shtickery" maybe or "Shtickeray" (at the end like you say "Hi") and the r ist spoken deep in the throat.

Beautiful means "schoen" and this is not easy to pronounce for you too, you didn`t choose the easiest words for the first time.

You don´t have an oe, in our language it is an o with two points on it. It is an o and an e spoken at the same time. The letters have to meet in the middle. Oh dear, do you really like to learn some more german words?

It looks like I found my friend. I am not sure. I got a very short e-mail and have to write back.

My best regards to you and all the other members here. In the north of Germany it is getting colder now. Mona

    Hi Marge,

ok, if you want you have a new friend in Germany - here I am. Smile

Lots of years ago I loved to knit but since a longer time I am lazy. This time here in Germany kniting (?) becomes a new refreshing. Lots of young girls learn to knit for example socks. And not only the girls, the boys too and so lots of young men. That`s nice isn`t it?

I like to sew sometimes. I did it for my daughter when she was a child. What I am doing now - actually I like painting the walls of our house with ornaments or pictures. I was sewing a cushion-cover for the swing but the mice got their babys between the sheets over winter time. In winter it is too cold for the swing outside and I store the covers in an arbour or maybe you would say summer-house. Last winter the mice found that place and now my beautiful cover, made of old and fine linen became destroyed. I am angry about that but what can I do?

Do you have clubs where you meet to work together? Send my regards and best wishes over the ocean to you. Bye Mona
