    I charge $1.00 per 1000 stitches.  I don't charge a set-up fee, but I do charge for any design that I don't have.

Re: How much to charge for designs

Marge- Certainly we can all charge whatever we think the client will pay, but I do want you to consider some things:

    • Do you really know what you are earning with that number?  It may be accurate, but there are lots of variables
    • What if your client wants lots of metallic threads?
    • If the fabric is difficult to work with, how do you handle that?
    • What if you have to do multiple hooping?

There are many more questions to ask yourself.  I do recommend my Excel Spreadsheet to assist you with your options.  It is easy to use and can open more options for your work charges.

Never give your work away unless that is the purpose (family or a charity).  But are you making enough to pay the electric bill?

Re: How much to charge for designs

    HI Pat

I was going to download your spreadsheet yesterday,  I have a coupon for ATG from the Community Circle for $10.00 and it wouldnot take it.  Wrote to Greg and waiting to hear from him.

I look at pricing on what I would pay for something.  Being I do have a business with the kennel I charge fairly for my grooming.  I know how long it takes to do a dog and charge accordingly.  It works as accual hands on, not drying time.  That is the theory I have used with ME, that is why I want your program to see where the difference is.

I have way to much to do with my own ME and don't think I would want to try and make a living by doing this, but I do want to be paid fairly for what I do.

    Thanks

    Marge

Re: How much to charge for designs

Hi Marge!  Just like doing a grooming job, embroidery can be challenging to charge.  After all, one dog could be badly matted or have a really bad temper - sort of like doing hair on humans!  Surprise

One thing about the spreadsheet is that is takes into consideration many, many variables.  Can it take in all of them?  I suppose there will be a job for which you get little or nothing in return and another where you may feel guilty for making a killing.  Believe me, coming up short for your services happens a lot more than coming up really flush!

Making a living is always a question that only you can answer.  For instance, I may be satisfied with a modest amount but someone else may feel that $50 per hour is a more appropriate wage.  The spreadsheet actually allows for that too.

Enjoy your craft and make some money at the same time, what a way to go!

Re: How much to charge for designs

I am wondering how everyone is doing with their newly starting businesses.  If you picked up one of my Embroidery Cost Analysis Kits, you are probably working toward a business of your own.

I am going to present some great tips at the Community Circle 2009 about business and ideas that you can use in your personal life as well.  I cannot wait to get the information to you all.

ME is not like the movies where "If you build it, they will come. . . "  You need to do some homework, make some plans and work methodically through your ideas.

One of my topics is going to be on "Motivation."  I know how difficult that activity can be at times and will be giving some tips on keeping your business lively when the going gets tough.

Re: How much to charge for designs

    Hi Pat,

Got your excell sheet and in looking at it I could not charge what figure I am coming up with.  I realize my time, material and machine are worth something but I know of very few people who could afford the price.

Think I will stick with $1.00 a 1000 and know I am not ripping anyone off.

Re: How much to charge for designs

That is interesting.  If you like, you can send me a copy of the figure you are using so I can see if there is anything I need to review.

It is possible that I have a 'glitch' you have found.  Let me know.  I am at:  pat71896@hotmail.com  When creating this type of document, a programmer cannot possibly think of every single issue that can come up.

Re: How much to charge for designs

When I started my home based business, I checked with others in my group. The going rate for my area was $1.00 per 1,000 stitches plus $5.00 per hooping. If you have to re-hoop two times to complete the design, that's $10.00. But, that's your perogative, depending on your customer, etc. Thread, stabilizer, designs, and all that's necessary to stitch out a design is expensive. If I just charge for the number of stitches, I start at $5.00, even if the stitchout has only 300 stitches in it. Hope this helps.

Re: How much to charge for designs

That information is great, however, my spreadsheet goes a lot further than those simple figures.

It takes into consideration some things like (in no order)

    • how much do you want to make for your work
    • specialized fabrics
    • machine costs
    • and so much more

For an off the cuff response, your's will probably work.  However, if your business plan requires some detail for your business - and a business plan is always a good idea - you will want the spreadsheet.  There is no guess work in the spreadsheet, it tells you exactly where you are in your costs.

Re: How much to charge for designs

Thanks Carolyne (beautiful name!).  There is so much discussion on what to charge for embroideries and your information is very good.  I am not certain what you mean by a 'full back,' could that be the back of a shirt or jacket?

Some of us, however, are doing smaller jobs and just getting started.  There are so many variables, do you consider the number of stitches, color changes, rehooping, quantity of items and fabric issues?  My spreadsheet does guide a beginner through some of the different things they need to remember including the above and so much more.

I am glad to hear that your shop is busy because it seems like something like embroidery may be considered unnecessary, and in these times, could be reduced or eliminated to save money.  When businesses like you describe are keeping busy, that is great news!!!
