Hello,
I saw your post while I was googling the internet looking for any information on getting past the problems that I was experiencing. I hope this helps.
I have this machine too, I have had it since the 1995 or so. I haven't used it since probably 1997. I saw it sitting in the corner of my sewing room and thought "hey why don't I load that up to my computer". Oh boy. I am running XP and after working on the numerous problems that cropped up. The loading was a success!
I used my original disks and they were so old that they did not want to work. Your computer has to have an A: drive and a comm port to plug in the machine. Additionally, you can make an XP computer run in DOS. you have to type your commands fron the START-RUN. Once I finally got all the software loaded (because of the stuck disk problem, I used the rotate disk, move doors back and forth and blow on the disk solution to get them working). Also, it was good to use the manual. Once I got the software loaded I ran into a CONFIG.SYS Problem, the program wanted there to be a FILES=40. I had to unhide the system software in the control panel to even find the CONFIG.SYS. I opened it with NOTEPAD and it was blank. So I went to the old computer that I used to run the Singer EU with. A Window 98 Machine. I copied off the CONFIG.SYS file (Not before ensuring that I had set a point for the system restore in case I messed something up). I copied that file to C:\CONFIG.SYS, open with NOTEPAD and added FILES=40 to the bottom line. I then went to the c:\SINGER\EU.EXE to run the program. It went into DOS and had an error with a COM2. I almost gave up at this point. Because I know some legacy equipment will just not run on XP. Then the computer asked me did I want to ignore the error? I clicked on YES. The after about 2 mins I looked at the bottom of my screen and there was some wierd box. I clicked on it and it opened up into the EU Software. I was able to start the software and sew out a circle design. I did restart my computer to determine if everything was OK.
As I remember the EU is a good machine, a little quirky, but one you get the hang of it, it really stiches out very nicely. Drawbacks are that the embroidery field is small. Additionally, I used to put my spools on a singer tiny serger and feed the thread through the tension into the machine.
The best part is that I am now able to use the machine. I hope this information can help you.
