    Hi Wendy,

Yes, you need an ATA (PCMCIA) adapter card for the CF card. The CF card will need to be formatted in the 300e before you can put designs on it - how to do this is in the manual. 1Gb ia a very large card for the machine and may take awhile to read. I have 2 256Mb cards but only put the designs I'm currently wanting to stitch out to reduce read / load times.

That is large, but it's hard to find smaller ones anymore.  Smaller is better.  I have 4 8mg cards, plenty large enough, the less you keep on the faster the machine can load the designes.     You might check out ebay for the pc card. Your CF card goes into that to put in the machine, also you might find some smaller cards on there. I emailed one guy that was selling cards and not only had small cards, but was more then happy to get rid of a few of them at a very nice price including shipping.
