RE: Gadgets you wouldn't want to live without!

All the posts sound great!  I have found many useful ideas, and some I am proud to say, I have been using already!  My best purchase was my Magna Hoop, as it has saved me a lot on stabilizer.  I recently bought a 26" LCD tv that I am using as my computer monitor for all those fine details on creating designs! (yes, the eyes tend to go quickly!)   I found a handy way to keep my little sewing scissors close at hand, I attached a Command adhesive hook on the side of my machine so that I hang them up when I am finished for the day.  They are always there when I return.  I also use a little retractable id badge holder I picked up at Wal-Mart for $.99 to attach another pair to me when I am wondering around my craft room, so that they are always handy.   I too purchased the Sidewinder, and would never be without it!  But, the most wonderful things in my sewing room are the custom cabinets and wall to wall peg board that my precious husband purchased for me to complete my "Playroom" as my granddaughter calls it.  I have a specific location for everything, so that I have plenty of room to "create".  I am thrifty, so I am always using recycled items to store things in.  One thing I reuse most often is the plastic container that my powdered coffee creamer comes in.  I use them to store beads, scrapbook supplies, yarn, elastic, ribbon scraps, dee rings, buttons, just about anything!  I looked around the house and found good use for some of my old antique items, which brings a certain "charm" to "grandma's playroom". I have one wall of my room with wooden dowel loaded with rolls of wrapping paper of various patterns on the peg board for that quick last minute gift that all of us MEers seem to give away!  I use hair clips to keep excess fabric out of the way as I embroider.  I use the tiny pony tail holders to keep my bobbins from unwinding.  I use the larger pony tail holders to keep my spools of thread from unwinding.  I put a plastic 18 compartment box, like you see in the beading section of craft stores.  I cut off the lid and set the bottom in the drawer beneath my sewing machine to hold all the different feet attachments.   Early on I found the "Embroider's Buddy" and "Little Embroider's Buddy" handy devices for perfect placement of embroidery on clothing.  I find it easier to just print out a picture of the design and play with it on the actual clothing to be sewn before deciding on placement.  I too have the Brother Innovis 4000D, and I found a cheap way to solve my lighting problems was with a 12.00 desk lamp with a power saver florescent bulb which really brightens the area without heating it up!  (Leave it to me to be cheap, but then again, it leaves me more money for my more expensive toys!)  I don't own the Thread Pilot, but I had my sweet husband to make me one out of 1x2 wood, dowels, and eye hooks.  I drew it out for him like I wanted, adding larger and smaller dowels for different types of thread that I use, and he rose up to the challenge like a champion and saved me all that money, (which I used to purchase ATGs Alphabet Xpress and Catalog Xpress :) !  ) ( He thought he had really saved a bundle.....hehehe)   Another tip for today is I used workout matting ( the kind that has interlocking pieces like a puzzle) I purchased at Wal-Mart to put under my machine as a shock absorber.  I am going to really reveal my thrifty side now.... I picked up a rotating spice rack at a yard sale for 5.00, and I cleaned it up, and use it for storage of small items like my hair bow clips, brads, speciality buttons, etc.  ( I also let my granddaughter open the little jars and "count" the contents of each one, she's practicing her numbers and colors without realizing it!) There are a lot of great storage containers on the market, and some are very inexpensive.  Just look around your own house, and think about using some of your own things in a non-traditional way, and you will find your own creative side!    Pamela256

All of your ideas are great. I buy the organic lettuce and it comes in a very nice plastic container with a top, it is clear and easy to see what the contents are. Ribbon, beads, elastic, buttons or whatever. It is about 8" X 6" so it is a generous size. Also I keep really nice boxes that have either a removable or attached lid and cover it with fabric or pretty wrapping paper.  Baskets in any size make nice storage containers. I have several large shelving units in "my play room", it is also my guest room. On top of the dresser I put a piece of wood 3 X 6 foot (towels under the wood to protect the dresser top) and put my cutting mat on it. I use the drawers to store fabric, on the top I use a basket to keep sissors, rotary cutters, etc... Buying the clear plastic storage containers when they are on sale is when I buy them. The ones that slide under the bed are definitely my favorite. A tall coffee cup is on my sewing table to hold sissors (put some cotton or fabric on the bottom to protect the points of the sissors. The command hooks is the next great tip I will add to my play room. Everytime I go in my play room I have the best time using all of the great tips, hints and information that I get on AnnThe Gran from all of the bloggers!! Everyone keep up the great work!!! :  ) and Happy ME'ing  :  )                                                                        Carol P (VA)
